No More Progress!

Apologies for the lack of updates lately, and sincere apologies for the major lack of progress reports. Unfortunately my progress reports have come to an end, at least where my weight loss is concerned.

You see after a rather frustrating 6+ months of watching what I eat, exercising regularly and losing a grand total of 9lbs I made a curious discovery. I was indeed losing body mass and whilst I was losing body fat from my arms and legs my belly didn’t seem to be shifting anything. It was only after I noticed that not only was I not losing any fat from my abdominal area but that it was in fact getting bigger that I started to worry, fearing some dire gastric issue I made an appointment with the doctor.

Now I’m not the biggest fan of doctors, in fact the way I’ve been treated and spoken to over the last couple of years whilst trying to get my fertility issues sorted out, has left me downright dubious of any assistance from the doctors. So I was mightily impressed when the doctor not only listened to me, booked me in for about half a dozen blood tests and a scan, but also asked me what my thoughts were. What impressed me even more was that one of the tests the doctor was sending me for was an ultrasound scan, now when you consider that this is something that I asked a doctor to send me for two years ago to see if my one remaining ovary was cyst free and functioning. Then was quite rudely told they wouldn’t even consider sending me for tests like that until my husband and I had been trying to conceive for at least a year, you can see why I was impressed.

This was short-lived as five days after having my blood tests done I phoned up for my results and was informed that all the results so far had come back normal, except my CA 125 levels were elevated. The only thing I knew about the CA 125 test was that it was the one for Ovarian Cancer, cue me falling to pieces. After being sent home from work, due to me being an emotional wreck, I started to get a bit of perspective on the test results and after chatting to a few people about the results and what they mean, realised that I didn’t really have anything to worry about and the results essentially mean that I have an inflammation of the pelvic area! Now when you consider that my belly is so swollen I look about 5 months pregnant, having a blood test tell me that I have an inflammation is actually quite hilarious! So due to all this we’re leaning more towards the idea that I have another ovarian cyst, which is quite an unpleasant prospect as I had one removed when I was 15 and they took one of my ovaries with it.

Also in the few days after going to the doctors I began to realise I had a lot of ailments over the last few months and they were all related.  I’ve been getting a severe pain in my upper thighs and under my belly, I had been putting it down to my gym workouts (which I have now had to give up) then realised it was the extra weight of my stomach putting a strain on the underneath. I’ve been getting quite short of breath, which I put down to just being unhealthy (which was another reason for the gym visits) but is actually from the growth in my abdominal area squashing my lungs. I’ve also been getting some sharp and unpleasant pains in my shoulder and heel for quite some months, which I put down to straining a muscle or something and it just not getting much of a chance to heal itself. This could in fact be down to the ‘growth’ pushing on or irritating certain nerves. Add in the loss of appetite, nausea, and backache and I’m a bundle of laughs really.

It’s now been nearly three weeks since my initial doctors appointment, I’m still waiting for some more results from blood tests I had done after finding out my CA 125 levels were raised, I have a scan appointment for Friday 8th June, and physically things have gone rapidly downhill for me. I wake up every morning nauseous and with a backache, I can’t stand up for much longer than 30 minutes before getting severe pains in my underbelly, and if I sit down for too long I get a severe pain in my shoulder. So on that basis I’ve unfortunately had to take some time off from work until I can get this all sorted, and now spend my days pottering about the house counting the days down till I have my scan and we figure out for definite whats going on with my little growth.

So that’s why there’s no more weight loss progress reports, and I’ll just be doing my knitting and sewing projects in their own posts.

Fingers crossed for friday!

Progress Report 13/05

Bit of a delay with this weeks progress report, it’s been a busy weekend. Also quite a productive couple of weeks, well in the world of crafts at least, unfortunately in the world of weight loss I seem to still be suffering the side effects of the ‘down time’ I had during my cold.

Weight loss: Woohoo, lost a pound! Ok so it’s the same pound I put on whilst I was ill but progress is progress. Speaking of progress I’ve come to a bit of an impasse at the gym I’m afraid. I’m getting absolutely nowhere with this running malarky (yes I know, it’s a treadmill that’s why I’m not getting anywhere, ha-ha. My darling husband has already tried that one on me). Every now and again I feel like I AM getting somewhere and then for the next few gym sessions I’m not even reaching my usual standard, and trying to wipes me out for the rest of the day. After this realisation, I’ve reluctantly come to a conclusion that I’m just not one of natures runners, so I’ve admitted defeat in that respect. Well not so much admitted defeat but more accepted my limits, so I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I will mostly be walking rather than running ‘Race for Life’ and have taken to brisk ‘cross country’ walking instead.  I know this will probably affect my calorie burning quite a bit, so I’ve upped my level on the bicycle hoping to balance some of it out.  Let’s see what the next two weeks bring.

Knitting project:  This one is really giving me a bit of a headache, I don’t mind intarsia but this one has ended up quite complicated, and I’ve had to make a few changes to the chart in places to make things a bit easier. The design itself has turned out fantastically, after 28 hours on the needles it looks really good. However behind the scenes is a whole different issue, too many different blocks of colour, too many cross-over yarns, the back of the piece needs a lot of tidying up. Then when I measured the piece up it’s at least an inch shorter than it’s supposed to be *sigh*.

So here’s hoping that once I do the back of the garment it’ll all start measuring up a lot better. If not . . . . I hope short skinny-jumpers come back in style.

Progress Report 27/04

Well it’s friday, so it’s that time again . . and it’s been an up and down couple of weeks.

Weight loss: Oh dear! Gained a pound, a bit disappointing but not surprised. I had a bad cold throughout last week and it’s taken me a while to get my energy levels back up, as a consequence I’ve only been to the gym a few times over the last couple of weeks. I had expected to put on more, but I suppose I’m getting into good eating habits now.

On the plus side I’m up to 20 minutes (10 walk/run repeats) on the treadmill now. In that 20 minutes I covered 2km, the data geek in me stepped up and worked out that if I did walk/run repeats during ‘Race for Life’ I could probably do it in about 50-60 minutes. That seems quite respectful  (for me) so for the moment I’m going to stick within the 20 minutes on the treadmill and see if I can run for a bit longer, maybe repeats of 1 minute walk, 2 minute run. I’m optimistic, hopefully that may also start making up for the 2 week lapse I just had too.

Knitting Projects:  Well I’ve had quite a busy couple of weeks, finished the little monkey suit I was making for my impending niece/nephew. Quite impressed with it really, was using cheap yarn so really didn’t expect it to turn out as well. Just to add a little finishing touch I also knitted a little monkey toy, the original pattern was in stocking stitch but I used garter stitch instead so it would go with the outfit. They go together quite well actually.

I’ve now moved on to my next project, a skeleton jumper of my own design. Well I was looking for a jumper with a skeletal picture on the front in an adult size but I couldn’t find any anywhere. So I adapted a basic jumper pattern (oversize). The chart I’ve made only works for the small size at the moment, if the entire garment works out ok I might see if I can adapt the chart for larger sizes.

10 hours on the needles and the jumper’s looking good so far.

Progress Report 13/04

Well it’s Friday which is my weigh-in day, so I thought i’d make it my general progress report day.

Weight loss: So yay for lots of progress this week. I’ve had my weigh-in day today and i’m now 243lbs, and have lost an inch off my waist and hips in the last two weeks.

This Gym thing is definately working for me, at the moment I’m only averaging about half an hour in the morning, and burning about 250-300 calories. At this rate i could be down to 231lbs in eight weeks, which would be a really fantastic result to go back to the fertility clinic with.

Knitting project: I’m practically done with the monkey suit for my impending neice/nephew, knitted all the pieces just got to sew it all together.

Really impressed with how it’s turning out. There are a few things, like the ears, which i would like to change. I’m sure with different kind of yarn it would turn out a lot better. So this has taken me a week to make and that’s only a couple of hours worth of work in the evening so i’d imagine on a good day this could only take me a couple of days.
There’s a few other designs by the same person which are quite cute http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/critter-kids-on-ravelry so might try them out at some point. My next project after this is going to be a skeleton jumper i designed.
